More Dubai FAQs
I’ve been so busy these past weeks. Not only do I have to put up with the 6-day workweek, our work timings were also changed to 9am-1:30pm, then 4:30-9pm. Sigh!
Anyway, I really appreciate those who have written to me asking questions about Dubai. And for the benefit of all who are thinking about asking them, here they are and my answers:
EP of France asks: What is the cost of living there? Rent? Average Salary? You can rent a decent 2-bedroom flat or villa at AED75,000 a year (that’s only 6,250/mo). For a better view of the rent, check out and go to “Flats to Let” and “Villas to Let”. A villa is basically a “house”, while a flat is an “apartment”. Prices usually are quoted on an annual basis, and vary from area to area. So ask about where in Dubai will your business be based and check out the internet for maps of Dubai so you’ll know where to look.AED1,500/mo for groceries is probably more than enough. We’re a family of 5 and AED2,000 a month is a very comfortable budget. Eating out is not as expensive as in France, I suppose. 5-star buffet is only about AED150/adult… a good meal can cost about AED50-100 a person, while fastfood is about AED20 a meal.As for the salary range, cela dépend. It really depends on the industry and what kind of work you’ll be doing, so I really can’t answer for that. Perhaps if you surf around the job websites in my blog, you’ll have an idea of the salary range. But at AED 20,000 a month, you can already lead a fairly opulent lifestyle if you don’t plan to save money and spend everything in Dubai:FLAT/HOUSE RENT: 120K/YEAR (3 bedrooms, in a good neighborhood)… that’s about 10,000/month.GROCERIES 1,500/MOCAR 2,500/MO (that’s a good brand new car, you can find ones that cost less)ELEC & WATER 500/MOCABLE TV 200/MOINTERNET 200/MOSCHOOL FEES 3,000/MO (this depends on what school, American schools cost more while others cost less)That gives you about AED 2,000 to spare on other things… let’s see:CIGARETTES AED 5-6/ PACKMOVIES AED 20/TICKET X 3 + Popcorn & Soda = AED 80-100PETROL AED 6.25/gallon (full tank costs me about AED 60, I fill up once a week)I hope this helps. Good luck!More FAQ’s to come… when I find the time once again.
6-Day Work Weeks Suck!
I feel like a freakin’ drone! I knew about it before getting the job and I dreaded it, but I never imagined it to be this hard!
I miss having the concept of a “Friday”. You party that night and unwind, and you know when you wake up with a hangover on “Saturday”, you can still chill out on “Sunday”. Or, you can just crash on Friday then do the party on Saturday.
But having only 1 day off means when you wake up that day, you instantly tell yourself “Ugh, I have work tomorrow!”. Not only that, I have to manage to squeeze in time for shopping, groceries, quality time with my kids and quality time for myself! All these I can’t even fit in one whole day so I have to pick only 1 or 2 things and have to drag myself out of bed early just to get to do them all. Forget grocery shopping with the kids on Fridays because of the hordes of other drones doing their grocery shopping. I tried to go shopping and do the groceries… no time! Every single day, I’m starting to wonder how long I can keep at this job… thinking “So, now I have money…great… but I don’t even have the time to spend it, much less enjoy it.”
I’m not kidding… I’ve always wanted to buy new clothes because I only have a total of 6 outfits. Yes… one for every day of the week.. and I hate wearing something over again but I have no freakin’ choice! I remember when I was fresh out of college and starting to work, after 2-3 months, people would tell me that they don’t see me in the same outfit. Sigh… those days are gone.
I guess in the end, everything has its price.
